The Irishmen and the Drug Dealers – Ireland

The Irishmen And The Drug Dealers – Ireland – Oct 1996 When Irish journalist Veronica Guerrin was killed investigating Dublin’s drug syndicates, a den of iniquity was exposed. This feature looks undercover at the drugs epidemic sweeping through Dublin and the impact ordinary Irish people are having on the drugs industry. It’s an armed and dangerous anti-drug vigilante squad. Many in Ireland believe it was the inactivity of the politicians which led to Veronica Guerrin’s death. Liz Allen has inherited Veronica’s job at the newspaper and discusses the well known Dublin drug dealer who is widely acknowledged to be behind the murder. On the worst streets nobody goes without protection, every street corner – a drug supermarket. On the inside, Linda is on Methadone and desperately trying to beat the drug trap. Where are her family? ‘They’re in their graves, all 6 feet under, through drugs’. But now the people are taking control and protesting outside drug dealers houses. Popular Irish marches intimidate local drugs warlords. ‘We’re just showing them that they’re not wanted’. Dublin’s police chief insists that his forces are in control. The vigilantes say that the fact theat they exist means there must be a serious problem in Irish society
