What Can a Doctor Prescribe?

Question by BlueEyed Snowflake: What can a doctor prescribe?
Can I get my doctor to give me something to help me with coming off of alcohol? Like something for light depression or edgyness? If so…what would she likely give me? What should I say? And please…don’t tell me to go to AA…I just want my Dr. questions answered.

i was on a drug called topamax for migraine headaches associated with multiple sclerosis. i decided to look up the drug online to see what i was taking, how it worked, side effects, etc. i read an article that said it was being used to treat alcoholics, and that the people in the study on it had a higher instance of staying off alcohol than those not on the topamax.

google topamax and alcoholism, there are many different links to check out. good luck

There is a drug called Naltrexone that has been used in some studies by doctors who are attempting to help alcoholics. Besides administering the drug, doctors also expect the alcoholic to attending counseling–not AA.

Whether you can get your doctor to give you an antidepressant or anxiety medication is something you will have to ask your doctor.
