Why Are Some People Against Experimental Medicine?

Question by romarti: Why are some people against experimental medicine?
Sometimes I hear news stories about people receiving experimental treatments for serious diseases. There always seems to be a researcher who implies that the patient(s) shouldn’t have participated in the treatment for some reason. It seems to me that if someone is genuinely sick and made aware of all the risks, they should be able to do any treatment they want. If I had a terminal disease and someone said that they wanted to try an experimental drug on me, and made me aware that it might very well kill me, why should anyone other than me and my family be involved in that decision?
